My Rescue Off the Mountain

September 19, 2019

Whether sunrise or sunset or city lights at night, I always appreciate a good hike up Piestewa. That city view, the climb, the sense of accomplishment and letting go of things when shit gets real.

No one ever wants to have to be rescued off a mountain, but last night’s hike didn’t go as planned. After a weird sensation in my neck and losing feeling in my arm before I reached the peak I decided to turn around. I got about halfway down when I started experiencing seizures and the guys behind called 911 for me.

Those guys were my trail angels last night and not sure how I would have managed without them. Unfortunately I only remember one of their names and it was Danny. I am eternally grateful for Danny! He did everything right, kept me calm, and I appreciate it all. The EMTs were kind and professional and treated me well and I appreciate them as well. Especially Cory who was great! Thanks for your stories and your easy going nature. It made my first ambulance ride easy.

Tomorrow I head into surgery to have Howard, my brain tumor removed. It’s time for us to breakup! Until this week we were getting along okay, but that’s all over now. I don’t know what the future looks like from here but I’m in good hands, and trust my surgeon. Talk about climbing mountains. I won’t soon forget this one! But I’ll be back Piestewa because this girl never turns around before bagging a peak.

More about Pam

I spent decades climbing mountains figuratively, and finding obstacles on every path I chose. I grew so depressed as an aging mother to adult children with special needs that I had lost who I was. That's when I discovered hiking and the mountains near my home. There's nothing like the peaceful solitude of watching the sunrise from a mountain top. Nature feeds my soul and has made me whole again.
